Volunteer Stories: Kim Fielding

I was lucky enough to meet the GP crowd whilst working as a volunteer nurse in Gunjur several years ago. The project initially was just a great place to go and unwind after working in the clinic and a chance for a swim an a Julbrew (local beer). But over the years I have been lucky enough to get to know Jo, Butch, Jen and Brendan. And I have been blown away by their enthusiasm for the projects they are involved in. I was lucky enough to work with Jo on a project with the KAJABANG clinic. Most importantly they live in the area.

People know them and trust them. The Gunjur Project and GVG is about helping the local community but most importantly their projects aim to provide people with the skills that will educate and empower them. I have seen the volunteer groups who stay with them and I have never spoken to one person who has not had a positive experience. Their enthusiasm, commitment and energy is infectious. I would recommend GVG to anybody who is considering a stay in Gambia, whether just for a holiday or for a volunteering experience.

I don’t know if it has changed me but some of my best times in Gunjur have been spent with them. They make everyone feel like friends. Go and visit them. You won’t be disappointed.
