Local groups we work with in and around Gunjur
We work with many local groups – these are some of them:
Friends of Bolong Fenyo
Bolong Fenyo is a protected nature reserve situated within the Gambia in the south-western region of Gunjur.
The Kajabang Village Development Committee (VDC)
They are working to improve the services available for their community. They currently have a small clinic or medic post – staffed by volunteers.
Gunjur Cultural Festival committee
Working to protect the local culture, languages and traditions of Gunjur which are of the utmost importance to its people.
Women’s Association Garden
The Village Development Commitee have a women’s’ garden which helps them grow crops that will sustain their families. You can work alongside the women pulling water from the well and watering the crops. We are hoping to link all these things to literacy and improved education for all.
Gunjur Environment Protection and Development Group (GEPADG)
Established in 1992, a registered community based non-profit organization. GEPADG are committed to protecting the wonderful surroundings including the Bolong Fenyon (a community wildlife reserve that is a unique wetland area). Practical help with bird hides or seating, improving publicity, renovating the visitor centre is welcome.
Kulukochi Youth Development Association
The Kulukochi area now has a dynamic group of people who are working towards better provision for the youth in the area. A playground is being built next to the brand new primary school and there are opportunities to further develop the area around the new school.
Community Nursery Schools
Many nursery schools in the area including Kajabang Community Nursery School and Mariama Mae Nursery – here you could read stories, run an art session, paint a wall – the list is endless.
Local Primary & Secondary Schools
Many primary schools including Kassa Kunda Lower Basic School and Gunjur Madina Kunkulding Lower Basic School – once again the list is endless – art workshop, sports development – schools are happy to give children new opportunities. Many Senior schools including Gunjur Upper basic and Sifoe Senior secondary.
Gunjur Girl Guides & Scouts
Gunjur Scouts and Guides are always eager to learn new skills.
Fandema MBOLO association
Mbolo is a word in Wolof that means ‘come together’. Areas of activity:
- Education
- Health
- Community Development
YORROF women’s development group
Run by a local teacher, this group is aimed at giving more women opportunities of learning.
GUB Science and maths group
This is a Gunjur Upper Basic School group, aimed at improving the outcomes for students with an interest in science and maths.
Gunjur sports committee
For all things sporting – football, rugby, athletics.
Poetry and drama group
This group use language creatively to share ideas and inform the community of current issues.
Gunjur radio
A small developing radio station.
