Pay for a Cataract Operation

£50.00

Treating cataract is a straightforward surgical procedure which can take as little as 20 minutes.

Cataract is the world’s leading cause of blindness, with around 18 million people blind as a result. Getting treatment for it is difficult in developing countries. Many people are needlessly blind from cataract because they don’t know that it can be cured.

Cataract is a clouding of the eye’s lens, which is the part of the eye  responsible for focusing light. The lens is made up mainly of water and protein. Over time, that protein builds up, clouding the light passing through the eye, making sight become blurred or fuzzy. Mostly, cataract is a natural result of ageing.

Often cataract develops in both eyes at the same time. The symptoms are a gradual blurring of vision which if left untreated can result in a total loss of sight.

Treating cataract involves an operation to remove the eye’s cloudy lens,  replacing it with a clear plastic one. This is a straightforward surgical procedure which can take as little as 20 minutes. Cataract surgery has been described by the World Health Organisation as one of the most cost effective health interventions in the world.
